NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF SCIENCE & MATH: 3
Voyager Academy volleyball team lost Thursday's away non-conference match against NC School of Science & Math by a score of 3-0 (13-25; 13-25; 12-25).
Today's game of volleyball has truly evolved as noted by one of the nation's top college coaches who has won multiple national volleyball championships. According to the renowned coach, the game is no longer about "Rotations", but primarily about "Match-ups" and use of the best available talent. This assessment was on full display and more apparent than ever tonight during the Lady Viking's match against the Lady Unicorns.
Leading early in Set 1, the Vikings' pre-set rotation exited their primary middle blocker off the floor. Disarmed to adequately match-up in the middle, the Unicorn's middle hitter proceeded to take control of the game as the Vikings' opponent went on a 12-3 run mainly through points in the middle. With a comfortable lead established by the time Voyager's middle blocker re-entered the game based upon the predetermined rotation, the host team subsequently closed out the set 25-13. The predestined scenario then repeated itself in each succeeding set to the delight of the partisan home crowd.
In each set Voyager utilized its full complement of rotations and players, along with shuffled various lineups in an effort to find the right chemistry and continuity that seems to have eluded them in recent games. On this night, the team found it challenging to handle NCCSM's core (5 of 6) starters who remained on the floor throughout most of the 3-set match. Compounding matters the Lady Vikings continued to struggle with serve receiving and ball control to get their potent arsenal untracked leading to their ultimate demise in the game.
Voyager Academy (9-12 record, 4-6 conference) face Vance Charter School at home on Monday, 10/9/17. Game time is 6 pm.
