GAME SUMMARY

Voyager Volleyball team won their non-conference home match against Durham Flight HomeSchool by a score of 3 - 0 Sets (25 - 21; 25 - 23; 25 - 22).

The Lady Vikings had to turn up the heat in the kitchen and use all the spices to take care of the scrappy bunch from Durham Flight.  The Home Cookin' came courtesy of a resilient but feisty Viking team who found a way to win despite being shorthanded three players due to injuries.  Voyager was forced to play once again without middle hitter Sophomore Kiera DeGroat (back), and outside hitter Senior Alyssa Greene (ankle), and now without middle blocker Junior Kamryn Boyce (ankle).  The Vikings hope to have at least one back in the lineup for the team's next game.

Voyager coaches shuffled the deck again and varied the rotations to offset the diminished troop count.  The Lady Vikings got off to a slow start, down 7 - 4 early in Set 1.  The sauces started to simmer in the Viking's canteen giving way to a three point 17 - 14 host lead at the midway point.  Smelling the aroma of a Set 1 victory in the air, Voyager served up the first course with a heavy dose of their defensive bisque special and attack mode vintage to wash down Set 1.

The Ladies from Durham Flight were certainly not accommodating to their host in Set 2 either, handing the Vikings more than a mouthful.  The Viking's found themselves down 10 - 5 in Set 2 before breaking out the main course of rocketry stew to pull even 16 - 16.  The consumption pace by both teams didn't cease down the stretch as the two jostled back and forth exchanging pleasantries until a fatal net violation dissolved the visiting HomeSchoolers in the second set.  Set 3 proved to be a lethal culinary delight to the invited guest with Voyager serving up the hustle a la mode and cannonry creme de la creme deserts.

Veteran leadership paved the way for the Vikings' stellar victory.  "Player of the Game", Senior Outside Hitter Caitlin Leggett (8 kills, 9 digs) delivered crushing attacks at all the big moments in the game, combined with strong defense and serving by "Defensive Player of the Game" Senior Libero Zarria Bratts (11 digs) and Senior defensive specialist Stacey Oxendine (10 digs).  Inspired by the no quit, determined play of the seniors, Junior Setter Kaley Stone kept the ship on course, while versatile Freshman Katie McLamb (6 kills, 17 digs) and the remaining Voyager corps provided timely support to help stymie the Flight's quest for a Viking take-down.

After the game, Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca noted. "I can't say enough how proud I am of our ladies.  Faced with adversity (players injuries) they continue to play hard and truly deserved this victory."

The Lady Vikings travel to Falls Lake Academy on Wednesday, 8/23/17.  Game time is 6 pm.
