Voyager Academy Volleyball team won at home against conference opponent East Wake Academy by a score of 3 - 2 Sets (23 - 25; 21 - 25; 25 - 20; 15 - 13).
Words can't truly describe this majestic Lady Vikings team. Miraculous, Unbelievable, Astonishing are just a few appropriate descriptions for the magical way this Voyager team somehow, someway consistently finds a way to win. They bend but never break. They refuse to fold in the face of defeat. This team simply bares down when the going gets tough and all seems lost to conjure up the "will-to-win" spirit that eludes most teams, however define the great ones.
Just ask the East Wake Academy Lady Eagles who witnessed firsthand the supernatural "Mojo" powers these Voyager Academy Lady Vikings possess. Down two sets to one to the visitors from Zebulon, the Vikings stormed back to snag another spine-chilling victory in the fifth set.
The game started unassuming as both teams jockeyed for position in the first half of Set 1 with neither team able to gain any cushion over the other to that point. With the set score knotted at 13 - 13, Voyager's cruiser encircled the Eagle descending in air attack formation to muster a 12 - 6 run to corral the opening set. In Set 2, the gritty East Wake bunch spread their wings releasing an effective repellent on the Viking's air roaming vessel disabling the home team's heat-seeking missiles. Facing a eight point deficit late in the second set, Voyager hit the barrage button to abruptly tie the game at 23 only to misfire on a service attempt that all but sealed their fate in the set.
Facing the inevitable starring one set from match defeat, the Lady Vikings called up its proverbial "Mojo", the high octane mystique that defies every opponent. As if to say, "been here, done this", the Lady Vikings came out blistering in the fourth set lambasting their unsuspecting adversary to oblivion. Blindsided, the Lady Eagles could only shake their heads in an effort to regain their faculties from the air assault that had just waylaid them out of nowhere. True to form, Voyager continued their relentless attack on their now exhausted winged guest building a six point lead in the fifth set. East Wake ladies gave it one last heroic gasp of their own to even the decisive set 13 - 13, before Voyager turned out the lights completely with successive photons to immobilize the visitor's last hurrah.
"Player of the Game" Senior Caitlin Leggett (15 kills, 26 digs) lead the Viking surge, supported by Freshman Phenom Katie McLamb (12 kills, 25 digs). Briggs Rose (Jr), Ashlyn Annis (Soph) and Summer Matthews (Frosh) combined for 13 kills, while Setter Kaley Stone (Jr) accounted for 23 service points in addition to guiding the Viking nuclear attack. Senior defensive gurus Zarria Bratts and Stacey Oxendine vacuumed up 31 digs, and Ellie Stockton (Jr) contributed 4 digs and 2 service aces in reserve.
Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca noted. "We're ecstatic about this win. Our ladies are absolutely incredible. This team has no quit in them, and will battle to the very end against any team they face. Our coaching staff, students, parents and fans are extremely proud of them."
