GAME SUMMARY

Voyager Academy Volleyball team won its conference opener at Falls Lake Academy by a score of 3 - 2 Sets (17 - 25; 25 - 27; 25 - 17; 25 - 18; 17 - 15).

The Lady Vikings doused the Lady Firebirds' flames in a five set heart stopper that left the crowd in need of cardiac resuscitation and Urgent Care after the game.  Voyager once again came from the depths of despair, then miraculously found a way to win.  Sitting alongside their coaches, the team's three wounded warriors could only watch helplessly from the sidelines one more time agonizing about the pending fate of their on-court shipmates.

Voyager started the game sluggishly sleepwalking into peril throughout the first set.  Once they hit the snooze button they were down 14 - 7, and could only glimpse the tailwind of the mythical Phoenix-like creature known as a Firebird soaring over Falls Lake.  By the time they awoke from their fairy tale dream, the unthinkable had occurred in the form of a blazing end to Set 1.

Shaking the cobwebs from their eyes as they changed sides of the court to begin Set 2, the Lady Vikings finally revved up the engine to show the host team their infamous jet stream, taking a five point lead they thought would last.  However, the fiery bunch from Creedmoor had other ideas.  Lunging across the floor to deflect almost every Viking rocket along with passing the ball with precision, the Lady Firebirds dodged the Viking lasers to pull even at 14 - 14 at the set's halfway mark.  The two teams proceeded to go toe-to-toe, neither budging or giving any ground to the other.  Leading 25 - 24 in the set, the Voyager troops had a chance to closeout the set, but a clear set ending attack shot by the right side hitter went awry leaving the door open for a late Firebird rally to end the second set.

Now down 2 sets to none as Dooms Day loomed over the "never say die" visitors from Durham, the magical Vikings did what they do best, come from behind in heroic style with a "No panic, Game on" mentality that has become their trademark.  Ramping up the RPM's a few more notches, Voyager scorched the Falls Lake ladies for the next two sets in convincing fashion setting the stage for a fifth set for the books.  To the crowds delight, Set 5 did not disappoint filled with memorable SportsCenter highlights along with one of the longest and best rallies you'll ever see between two opposing teams.  The determined foes dueled to the very last point spawning
arrhythmia for the adoring crowd.  Falls Lake jumped out to a 5 - 2 lead early in the "winner take all" set, only to see the lead evaporate as Voyager pulled out the heavy duty hose to extinguish the Firebird's remaining radiant glow, in addition to saturate the high hopes of the partisan cheering home fans.

"Player of the Game", Freshman Katie McLamb (10 kills, 14 digs), and Senior Caitlin Leggett (10 kills, 10 digs) lead the Voyager charge, with Setter Kaley Stone (Junior) at the helm.  Seniors' Zarria Bratts and Stacey Oxendine provided additional defensive support with 12 digs and 9 digs, respectively.  Sophomore Ashlyn Annis chipped in 5 kills, 7 digs.  The Vikings took an all hands on deck approach to victory using every able body with medical clearance and wearing a road red team uniform to help seal the deal to include calling up one of the Voyager best JV players, Freshman Summer Matthews who also saw minutes in reserve.

Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca stated afterward. "We were lucky to come away with a victory tonight.  Our ladies proved how mentally tough they are being down but not out.  We're just happy for the win."

The Lady Vikings come home to face Southern H. S. on Friday, 8/25/17.  Game time is 6 pm.
