GAME SUMMARY

Photo shows "No Call" hitting error by Ravenscroft during Set 4.

Voyager Volleyball team lost a squeaker to Ravenscroft School by a score of 1 - 3 Sets (20 - 25; 18 - 25; 25 - 18; 25 - 27).

Voyager Lady Vikings gave #16 ranked Ravenscroft all they could handle on the road in Raleigh, NC.  Down two sets, Voyager staged a dramatic comeback only to be thwarted by a controversial Referee "No Call" of a ball hitting error by the opponent into their own net that in the end cost the Vikings an opportunity to pull off another major upset in the region.

Missing integral parts to their vessel throughout the match due to injuries, Voyager utilized a makeshift lineup and all available components at their disposal.  Taking an early 8 - 4 lead in Set 1, the Lady Vikings purring motor started to sputter as Ravenscroft pulled even at the midway point using a late rally to closeout Set 1.  The Lady Ravens continued to hover over the Viking's ship repeating its aerial sequence in Set 2.

Just when you thought a sweep was undoubtly in the making, then came the 3rd Set act in this big screen movie.  Unphased by the previous sets outcome, Voyager broke out the gauntlet and started their assault.  Steadfast in command trust scripted approach - play sound defense, ball control and relentless attack, the cinematic production now took a different turn.  Voyager troops began their descent on the Ravens from every direction to capture Set 3.  Helpless to stem the "Ole Mo" tide, the Lady Ravens had minimal answers to the gunnery that besieged them as Voyager encroached from every direction for most of the fourth set.

As in all good movies, the finale wouldn't be complete without some drama.  Already down one key cast member with Sophomore #14 Kiera DeGroat (MB/MH) out due to injury, disaster then struck Voyager again towards the tail end of the crucial Set 4.  Junior #2 Kamryn Boyce (MB/MH) suddenly screeched out in pain at the end of a Viking point.  She grimaced and abruptly hobbled to the bench with a severely twisted ankle injury.

Now for the climatic "coup de grace" finale to this silver screen Oscar honoree.  With Voyager leading 25 - 24, and serving to nail down the fourth set that would bring the match even, stage right the moment that will live in infamy.  The play consisted of an apparent Ball-in-the-Net "No Call" by the two game officials that allowed a would be Set 4 ending play to continue in action.  Upon receiving a dispute by the Voyager team Captain on the floor at the end of the play, the two officials came together to discuss the incident.  After several minutes in deliberation, the head official awarded the point to Ravenscroft.  The Lady Ravens ultimately won the set by a score of 27 - 25 to claim victory in the set and match.

During the controversial fourth set play Ravenscoft's Right Side hitter attempted an attack hit from the right side of the floor, however the ball caromed into and off the net backwards in what would have ended the point, and given the fourth set to Voyager.  All Voyager players on the court stopped play and became jubilant as each viewed the ball hit into the net thinking they had won the point and set.  Simultaneously, the Ravensroft hitter fell to her knees in visible agony and frustration for her hitting error.  Her fellow Ravenscroft teammates continued to play keeping the ball alive in an effort to influence the obvious missed call and nail down a trophy for best supporting cast, to the dismay of the Lady Vikings on the court.  Can you say "and the winner is?"  Ravenscoft players won the extended play point to tie the game at 25 -25.

Although not permissible during play, videotape and photos show the ball did in fact hit into the net and bounced backwards on Ravenscoft's side of the court, untouched by a Voyager player.  The point and set should have been awarded to Voyager based upon the hitting error committed by the Ravenscroft player forcing the two teams to play a decisive fifth set.

The Lady Vikings' valiantly rallied around their Senior leadership of #4 Caitlin Leggett, #15 Stacey Oxendine, and #22 Zarria Bratts, while Junior Setter #3 Kaley Stone took the helm to steer the Vikings' ship.  The team's strong support entailed Freshman #7 Katie McLamb, Sophomore #5 Ashlyn Annis, and Junior #16 Briggs Rose, along with the aforementioned ankle twisted wounded warrior.

Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca had no immediate comment after the game.

The Lady Vikings come home next to face Durham Home School on Monday, 8/21/17.  Game time is 6 pm.
